Empathy in Practice: ICHFN Students Visit Paripurnata Half-Way Home

Learning Compassion Through Experience: ICHFN Students Visit Paripurnata Half-Way Home

The Institute of Child Health and Family Nursing (ICHFN) organized an enriching educational visit for B.Sc. Nursing 6th Semester and GNM 2nd Year students to Paripurnata Half-Way Home, Kolkata — a rehabilitation center dedicated to the recovery and reintegration of individuals with mental illness.

The visit offered students a unique opportunity to observe the psychiatric rehabilitation process and understand how community-based mental health care fosters healing, dignity, and independence. Students interacted with healthcare professionals, counselors, and residents, gaining firsthand knowledge of the therapeutic programs and daily support systems that help patients transition back into society.

Through guided discussions and observation, students learned about the emotional, psychological, and social aspects of mental health recovery. The experience emphasized the significance of empathy, patience, and effective communication — qualities that are essential for every nursing professional.

The visit was both educational and deeply moving, reinforcing ICHFN’s commitment to developing nurses who approach mental health care with understanding and humanity. It encouraged students to view nursing not just as a profession, but as a compassionate service to society’s most vulnerable members.
