Exploring Public Health in Action: ICHFN Students Visit Garden Reach Water Works
The Institute of Child Health and Family Nursing (ICHFN) organized an insightful educational visit for GNM 1st Year students to the Garden Reach Water Works, one of Kolkata’s major facilities responsible for treating and distributing safe drinking water across the city. The visit was a vital part of the community health nursing curriculum, aimed at connecting theoretical learning with real-world public health practices.
During the visit, students observed the entire water purification process — from raw water intake to sedimentation, filtration, and chlorination. They gained practical knowledge about how large-scale water treatment plants operate to ensure a continuous supply of clean and safe drinking water to millions of residents.
Experts at the facility explained the importance of water quality monitoring, disease prevention, and the crucial role of safe water in community well-being. The students also learned about government initiatives and infrastructural efforts to maintain public health standards in urban areas.

This educational exposure provided future nurses with a deeper understanding of how environmental health, sanitation, and access to clean water directly influence community health outcomes. It strengthened their perspective on preventive healthcare — a cornerstone of nursing education.
The visit concluded with an interactive session where students discussed their key learnings, reinforcing ICHFN’s mission of nurturing knowledgeable and socially responsible healthcare professionals.
